Yesterday i pedaled the 50 mile course at whiskey tango fondo. The 70 and 100 were tempting but i wasnt sure about my fitness and wanted to try a few new things on the ride; i did not have a cycle computer or a watch or track the ride with an app. I wore a tshirt and hikers on flat pedals. I did not wear a bib or padded shorts- just some jogger length baggies.

Disaster did not strike. I had only a vague idea of the time or where i was on the course. My butt hurt a little but no more than any other ride. Flats were fine. Pedaling in the shadow of the Sierra, i thought about John Muir and what he accomplished with little more than curiosity and will. I spent a lot of time soaking in the surroundings.

Conclusion: hard things dont always require specialised, expensive equipment. Just a willingness to do the thing.
