    The cars have no door handles, they trap people inside them and catch fire. They're death traps. Need to be recycled for safety reasons.

    That's true.

    The older ones had the emergency release directly connected to the door handle.

    Tesla made them worse at some point, where the emergency release wasn't connected to the handle.

    Honestly the simplest design solution to the door danger is a replacement door design that uses a frame for the window.

    All the stupidity is so the glass can be flush with the car body, which then means you need an electric mechanism to retract the glass when you open the door.

    Is designing a less stupid retrofit door less resource intensive than ripping the car apart and recycling?

        Unfortunately that's nearly any electric car.

        I think some Chinese companies are making progress on less terrible battery chemistries, but anything energy dense enough for a vehicle is still at least somewhat dangerous.

        Unfortunately no one is willing to switch back to a transportation system built around trams or trains with overhead wires.

        also don't make it about electric, fart cars are equally poisonous and burn more often. It's almost like there's a giant tank of fuel inside, hooked to a pump!

          Rip out the computers?

          Teslas are bad cars made of good parts.
          The batteries have lots of life left in them after Tommy Tesla wrecks his fancy toy in ludic mode. Turns out 3-tonne toys are unsafe!

          There is a college called Weber Auto with a youtube channel showing teardowns and explanation of the subsystems and their components for those seeking inspiration

            I think the earlier generation Li-Ion batteries may burn hotter and be harder to put out than gasoline. But at least there's no CO2.

            There's probably room to improve the safety of EV and batteries as we see how things go wrong.

            Smaller, lighter vehicles, going more slowly would also make it easier to make them safer.

                I found this company EV West that uses the Tesla powertrain for retrofits for gasoline cars. https://www.youtube.com/@EVWest

                I suspect they know quite a bit about what computer buses are needed to control the power train.

                  iirc lithium-cobalt-oxide cells were used in famous burny Toshiba laptops and the Tesla Roadster and Model S.

                  This chemistry, LiMnO and LiPo cells all have the ability to self-oxidize, making a hot and unsnuffable fire.

                  put it in a bucket of water, let it boil the water until it is done seems to be the only treatment... hard to do with cars!

                  Home-brewers seem to have mostly switched to LiFePO4, which as far as I know is very reluctant to burn.

                              @alienghic @bri7 LFP batteries are quite safe. As in, you can throw them into a fire and they still won't explode, or you can take a pick-axe to them and they won't catch fire. They also last 3-4 times as long.
