    @robyn "Could the extra cards be accounted for by Albertans who have passed on but are still in the system? Nally said the government would need to do more research into why there’s such a large discrepancy"

    Oh for fucks sake. We know there's rampant fraud but also we haven't made any effort at all to check.

    @dragonfrog it is absolutely bizarre. also, when they say "cards," do they mean the flippy floppy paper things that get issued, or do they mean actual distinct health care *numbers*. These are obv very different, and I don't see them make that distinction 🧐

    the former is: I changed my name, I get a new set of cards. I moved within AB, same. I lost my wallet, same. etc etc.

    I think it's mostly a dogwhistle tbh 🙄

      @robyn

      Is it just me, or does it look like someone in the UCP asked “AI” to redesign our licence card?

      imho it’s pretty ugly… and yes: made infinitely worse by the racist, fascist, prejudice-enabling maple leaf in the corner.

        @robyn I think a whole lot of the time, when people lose their wallet or the card goes through the laundry, they also get a new health number. e.g. If they moved a long time ago and didn't update their address of record, they probably can't show proof of address to correlate with the old record, so a new one gets created.

        I bet people who are unhoused for any length of time go through a lot of health numbers - their stuff gets stolen so often.

          @DavidM_yeg @robyn

          Is there a penalty for defacing the card?
          I feel the strong urge for some civil disobedience.

            @ScribblersEmporium @robyn

            It violates the Traffic Safety Act to drive with a cracked, mutilated, altered, or defaced card. Fine is $400+

            In general it’s against the law to alter or deface an official document.

            Just might be worth it though.

              Ok. Subtle it is then and no hole punch. Sigh.

                @ScribblersEmporium @DavidM_yeg @robyn An itty bitty rainbow sticker over that corner of the card would probably suffice...

                  I love this! As a removable thing it seems easy to defend. I wonder if we can create something easy enough to access and consistent enough to be a real statement instead of a weird ‘personal quirk’?

                    @robyn well, I guess I'll be using my RPAL as ID from now on.

                      Ok, the more I think about it, the more I like this idea.

                      Does anyone have connections or skills to develop a 1x1 cm rainbow maple leaf sticker that will adhere to a licence card but remove ok if needed. Something shiny and iridescent perhaps? Symbolizing a commitment to Canada on behalf of *all* the residents of Canada regardless of gender, race, immigration status, etc.
