A new directory has appeared on Linux distros.

It may look like a small addition, but standardizing something many Linux users already do can improve workflows, application behavior, and even documentation over time.

    @itsfoss oh noooo

Now I need to move all my Projects-X, Projects-Y etc. under Projects🀣.

Which is survivable I suppose, a one time hassle, but should it be

    Projects
    -- Projects-X

    or

    Projects
    -- X

This is the type of existential question that keeps me awake at night πŸ˜…

@itsfoss almost certainly will move all my Projects from~/Documents/private_documents/developer/... to just ~/Projects. It will be strange adjusting to the new workflow.

Although it will break a lot of symlinks, as I tend to symlink files to so the Nextcloud doesn't upload the same file twice as it does with hardlinks.

@itsfoss I’ve always created this directory manually anyway.

@autumn @itsfoss Will the folder you created be "accepted" when the implementation arrives to your distro or is there any risk of conflicts/overwriting/duplication if there's an existing ~/Projects?

@laxxius @itsfoss adding this update won't magically change anything except a few environment settings. Eventually you might see a few apps defaulting to using it as a save location, the same way lots of apps still don't follow XDG user dirs

@itsfoss this is not the best option for OSS developers who made the choice to have their project folder at the root of the filesystem.

plus some dev environments could potentially taint sources and debug binaries by leaking absolute paths containing the username, which may be seen as a step back in terms of security/privacy

@tobozo @itsfoss the "Projects" folder in the root folder - which is blessed by the FHS - is arguably /opt

@jandi @autumn Uhm, dunno if this is a legitimate question or not...

But in any case, distribution changes (should!) _never_ overwrite _anything_ in users homedirs.

So if you already have a ~/Projects ... it will just be used as is. πŸ˜‰

@hackbyte @autumn Not before answering in general, but before dropping veiled accusations it is preferable, yeah.

No hard feelings, see you around.

It may look like a small addition, but standardizing something many Linux users already do can improve workflows, application behavior, and even documentation over time.
