Titin grossed me out as a child so much, i would rip out the pages from the Billikéns i used to read as a child. they were produced in Argentina and introduced me to Mafalda and the wonderful photo essay aesthetics popularized by the publishing house Dorling-Kindersely.
i have hated TinTin since forever and use it as a measure for not just how racist a person is, but anti-Black.
cannot tell you how disappointed i am that Stephen Spielberg and Peter Jackson made a whole ass movie about Tintin

@blogdiva I read Mafalda in Chinese growing up! I was so sad when I came to Canada and no one knew what I was talking about.

@blogdiva I haven't seen it in recent decades. I actually remember this exact comic from my childhood.

@blogdiva They re-published it and tried to make it acceptable by changing a few lines and adding a foreword explaining "it was a different time bla bla bla..."
The usual BS.The Hergé Foundation, that owns the copyrights, is well-known for its conservative *cough* white supremacist *cough* views.
They sue anyone who dares question Hergé's blatant racism or simply mock his work.
They're assholes and they're assholes with a LOT of money. -

I just kind of appreciated the aesthetic of the cartoon character. -

@blogdiva Tintin in the Congo was omitted from the books available in the English editions available when I was a kid for very obvious reasons. Strange to find this just lying around in a waiting room somewhere. Like, that Seinfeld episode with Jerry finding a Penthouse magazine in his dentist’s waiting room weird.

They're assholes and they're assholes with a LOT of money.I prefer the Franquin comics (Gaston Lagaffe etc), at least Franquin moved on from those stereotypes in 1980s and started making some very left-wing content (including criticising fossil fuel use and pollution, as well as working with human rights organisations)
Gaston Lagaffe is quite subversive/anarchist to be fair..

@blogdiva I never liked Tintin, after reading the comments I now know why. I grew up in S.A. in full apartheid and left in disgust when I turned 21. I used to say I wanted all people to be green (I love Biology)

@blogdiva I don't remember any of the characters names. The Cantonese name for the series was "toddlers look at the world".

@blogdiva My Chinese slang isn't that good, so maybe that term can also be used for kids?

@mxchara yeah. i gave him a slight pass because the Orcs were Tolkien’s concoction, BUT! Tintin crosses a line.

@blogdiva Same. TinTin is horrible, and same for the Smurfs.
