every time i talk to friends in EU/UK, do the EUD/liter to USD/gallon conversions, and realize that $7-10/gal is what they're paying, i kinda wish we'd be at $5+/gal just so folks start looking at non-gas cars.

The routine high prices in Europe also mean that governments can cut the massive fuel taxes temporarily to keep the costs reasonably close to what we're accustomed to.

It also helps a lot in the Netherlands that public transportation and bicycling infrastructure can accomodate most of the people who do get priced out of buying fuel.
