While it was eclipsed by their more commercially successful collection of fairy tales, the two-volume "Deutsche Sagen" by the Brothers Grimm was at least as important for German folklore research.
In it, they shared German local and historical legends, as opposed to the "timeless", unlocalized fairy tales. And it is this work that inspired hundreds of other German folklore researchers to publish their own regional collections.
