I've decided that the violin is not for me.

Ooh, I hadn't even considered double bass; thank you. Which do you honestly think would be easier for someone in terms of existing neck and/or shoulder pain, cello or double bass?
@plutarch Hard to say... I'll have to ask my partner, but I think in general the more ergonomic instrument is the cello. The bass does need to be bowed more from the shoulder, as I recall.

@bammerlaan @plutarch for double bass, you also need to consider transport, if you plan on taking it anywhere at all. Not all cars are equally double bass friendly. If you travel by air with it, you’ll need a ($) hard case and trust the luggage handlers / hope it doesn’t get lost or pay for a seat on the plane for your instrument. Also, consider the ergonomics of carrying it - that’s often done on the shoulder, but there are also wheeled cases

@hutterer @bammerlaan @plutarch wow, didn't know you had to consider car size for instruments!

Other than a piano, even. Sheesh.

@plutarch @ai6yr @hutterer @bammerlaan there are electric double basses. Or just consider an electric bass guitar and a small amp. For most practice, sitting is fine with a foot rest and there is classical music available.

We always have to have a vehicle capable of at least one double bass, 1/2 cubic meter of drums, two suitcases, dance boards (which thankfully breakdown flat), ice chest, and light instruments on top.

I haven't run across an electric bass that sounds good with a bow.
The acoustic-electric travel basses that feel right and don't take two days to settle after set up start at $30k. And still sound like a stick with strings. -

Here's some young person with a cello on a bicycle!!
Phil (ascentale) (@ascentale@sfba.social)
@bikenite@fedigroups.social A8-2. I also saw this on the way home this week. A parent, riding with kid on the back of an Xtracycle long-tail, with an electric conversion. The kid is carrying a cello(?) as a backpack. https://youtube.com/shorts/BIkPQl39V8w?feature=share #BikeNite

If you want to use a bow (which I do) the bridge needs a curve on it...most electric sticks don't have half the room needed.
Even a crappy student-grade upright, well set up, has good resonance. An electric basically makes a sine wave. You can add flavor with pedals, but it's always a little dry.
Same difference as a 1910-1980 stienway grand and the best nord keyboard you can buy.
It sounds the same over crappy Bluetooth eatbuds.
But if you get any closer to the music, you can tell the difference. -

@ai6yr @johntimaeus @rsanders @plutarch @hutterer Not an extremely rare sight here in the Netherlands

That bicycle infrastructure looks like a death trap though.

@johntimaeus @ai6yr @hutterer @bammerlaan @plutarch despite how most vehicles have grown in size, compare old Camry/Accord to modern Corolla/Civic actual cargo capacity is not so great. My '71 Impala sedan had an enormous trunk, almost enough space under the hood for aux engine, and big cabin. Though no crumple zones, which is why I got so many messages left under wiper saying call if wanted to sell. Demolition drivers wanted it.

I threw a cheap guitar in a hiking backpack and road 4 miles to my college class - and then back home after, twice a week - for a summer semester.
I don't remember it raining any of those days. Lucky...
Got the credits.
Gotta do, what you gotta do...
