Has anyone on here played with pummer circuits?

@MLE_online hmmm, I think I have everything except the nicads.
@JohnS_AZ I am planning to just use a couple supercaps in place of the batteries
-
@Stormgren @MLE_online Ah, then the ones I have won't work for the enable. Lemme look at my other pile, lol.
@Stormgren @MLE_online look! DM the address to send them to. Lemme find some static safe foam and a little box

The modern online retail economy sucks!
I need one 74AC240 chip for this. I could order a pack of 10 of them from Amazon (yuck) for $12.25 + $6.99 shipping, a single one from ebay for $2.50 + $12.50 shipping, a pack of 10 of them from ebay for $4.99 + $5.20 shipping, or one for $2 + $10 shipping from Mouser.
UGH
@MLE_online FWIW, Mouser does have a somewhat hidden economy shipping option that’s $6. But yeah, still bananas for a single part.
I’ve been doing inventory on my parts and it occurs to me that I have a lot of extra stock I could share, if only there were some way to do it. I’ve thought it would be neat to have some kind of parts-share site that would allow you to find someone local who has an extra chip or 50K pot or whatever. I think safety might be an issue for sharing mailing addresses. I dunno.

@Stormgren @MLE_online Four enough? (not that I have ever used these once in the 20? years they have been in my garage).

@ai6yr ya, that's plenty!

@bytex64 @MLE_online I would love this in PartsDB. At least inside a closed network.

@MLE_online Also does it have to be AC? Would a cheaper HC or LS part work or do you need the 100MHz speed?

@MLE_online @petrillic Yeah, I’ve been thinking some kind of static export plugin that can just generate an inventory page would be neat for that.

@bytex64 that I don't know. I was just going by the schematic

@bytex64 @MLE_online SiliconSocial.

@MLE_online I’m reading the Make article about it, which uses an AC240, and it definitely doesn’t need it. It’s just doing some low speed switching. Any kind of inverter with enable would work.
FWIW I have a “solar light controller” design that just uses a single transistor. It only uses a single NiMH cell though, so something will have to step up the voltage on the output (I use a joule thief). https://dominionofawesome.com/vca/doodles/solar-light-controller/

Has anyone on here played with pummer circuits? If so, do you have any circuits you like?
(Please don't just send me links to pummer stuff online that you've never tried. I know how to use search engines)
@MLE_online Have you seen this one?
Make a Joule Thief
Make a Joule Thief: Yes, it's the infamous Joule Thief, in Instructable form! For those of you who don't know, the Joule Thief is a tiny little circuit that allows you to drive a white or blue LED from voltages as low as 0.5 volts. You think those batteries are dead? D…
Instructables (www.instructables.com)
I would say the 74AC240 is overkill when what you really need is just a decent transistor ...

@acsawdey that's a joule thief though, not a pummer. I want it to do the pumming thing

@MLE_online Isn't that just a capacitive voltage booster?

@acsawdey no, they do this blinking/pulsing thing that's neat

@MLE_online @ai6yr This is the most heartwarming thread I've seen today. Finding new homes for out pet ICs is what the internet was made for!

@RueNahcMohr you always say canadian mail is extremely slow and unreliable though!
@MLE_online @RueNahcMohr As a punishment for not reaching his 52 robots in 52 weeks goal, he now has to build a robot that yeets the envelope across the border, right into the slot of a US Mail mailbox.

I would pay $5 for one if i could get it in a store right now in person, using my own body to pick it up and pay for it
@MLE_online I’m gathering up a Mouser order. Less useful since we’re not local, but let me know if you want to add to it for me to ship on to you. $2-4 shipping, what a savings?

@zackstern someone local is already mailing me a few, but thank you very much for the offer!
