@blinry I’ve been happy with Fastmail.
If your family member is not a technical person and they’re ok with depending on you, having a dedicated domain can make switching providers painless.
The obvious caveat is that they become dependent on you, which can be terrible for several reasons even if you’re the nicest person on earth.

@blinry been happy with migadu, but might need own domain. i connect to imap with macos mail client.

@blinry Anything but Tuta because of their racketeering practices.
Had a free account, did not log in, it was suspended, but because I wanted to recover another account tied to it, I had to pay, and take over my own account.

@blinry Variomedia. I'been using them as provider for my own domain and have been very happy with their spam filtering and their handling of my (very few) support cases

@blinry I recommend Posteo: ultracheap plan (1€ per year, billed yearly), 4gb storage, based in Europe, CalDav included.
