Rapid Evolution in Times of Climate Change: University of Greifswald Presents the Fast Genetic Adaptation of the Wasp Spider
It has only taken a few decades: the wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi) has expanded its range from the Mediterranean region to northern Europe – even as far as southern Finland. In so doing, it has adapted much faster genetically than previously thought possible. This is shown in the results of a new study from researchers at the University of Greifswald, which was recently published in the journal Ecological Monographs. The results deliver important indicators for understanding how species react to climate change – and how fast evolution can actually occur.
