How do we feel about it? Is it something an Owlbear might need? Is there a more fediversy (that's a word) alternative?
If the Owlbear did in fact get an XMPP, would there be any particular server they should join/client they should use?
And would you mind terribly boosting this so I can get more answers?

@cocaine_owlbear The key question is what you want to achieve with XMPP :-).
If you want to get your friends & family off the centralized / evil messengers, https://snikket.org is a good point to start: it's a self-hostable or rentable package with a cool brand and apps and a very slick invite workflow which worked for my mom.
If you want to give it a spin to meet people or whatever, you can look at https://providers.xmpp.net/ for a list of servers to join. https://joinjabber.org/docs/ also has a swath of resources on getting started, including app recommendations.
(Disclosure: I am involved in Snikket (and quite a bit of other XMPP) development, but not in the (optional) paid hosting. I do know the people who are, though. I am also somewhat involved with Join Jabber, and I am a member of the XMPP standards foundation. So I am *naturally* biased :))

@cocaine_owlbear I should also ping the projects I mentioned: @snikket_im and @joinjabber and @xmpp_providers .

@cocaine_owlbear @jssfr oh yeah, Discord is awful and I'm done with it. Always hated it anyway

@cocaine_owlbear XMPP is really easy to self host, most distros have the ejabberd package. Pretty much install and go on Debian.

@cocaine_owlbear@retro.pizza
In my opinion #xmpp has many similarities to the #fediverse. It is a free and open protocol, federated and has a lot of #floss servers and clients.
I use it since around 2003/4 and operate my own server since 2013. It is my main communication channel to friends and family.
