@croyle ...and SF like The Healer's War is outside of my current date range. Did read the Acorna novels she wrote with Anne McCaffrey as a kid.

@SFRuminations @croyle *The Healer's War* is very good, for anyone else reading the comments here. I'd call it fantasy (local magic, amulet) rather than science fiction, although the magic isn't the main focus. I also enjoyed her earlier fantasy with a hearth witch.
