    Some ants are 3cm long. So it could be that size to start.

      I don’t care if it’s unreasonable.

      To properly study ants I need an ANTROV (ant remote operated vehicle)

      This would be a tiny robot. Ant sized, with antenna and cameras and sensors so you can go into the nest and find out what the heck is going on in there!

      This is one of the main reasons I follow robotics TBH.

                @futurebird now could you make a wireless camera that was, like, tiny enough to hide in a grain of corn or something else that an ant might carry back to the nest. pinhead-sized camera

                      @TheSecondVariation@graz.social @futurebird@sauropods.win So pill cameras are about 25mm long and 10mm in diameter, which is about the size of the larger bugs myrmepropagandist mentioned...

                      If you could make those move somehow you'd be most of the way there.

                      That said, I don't know how ants would react to a pill with a lamp on it shuffling through their nest, but it'd
                      probably affect whatever ant behaviour you're trying to observe.

                        @richpuchalsky @futurebird you gotta make it out of diamond and titanium and every material that sounds cool. that way it will be indestructable.

                        also if the vehicle is unlike-enough from anything the ants perceive as threats than it should prooobably be fine?

                          Maybe. But if you could let it pick up the colony scent they might not care.

                            @ClaireH @TheSecondVariation

                            There are some butterflies whose larvae cause ants to carry them into their nest and put them in the brood. I wonder if one could steal some hydrocarbons from the surface of one of those larvae and slather it on a pill camera then the ants would pick it up and take you on a tour.

                            I guess getting it back might be the issue...

                                Listen folks either the cameras get smaller or the ants get bigger, you decide how this is going to go.
