    @alice Where’d you go? I’ve been satisfied with namecheap, but heard they recently got VCed, so am bracing for awfulness.

          @hacks4pancakes University.

          Seriously, this particular university's relentless promotion of LLMs really wears me down. They also seem to have a deal with Microsoft, where they require every professor to have a slide promoting Copilot while discourage using ChatGPT. Someone probably has a lot of money in their pocket in this process

            @hacks4pancakes I discovered this morning that even @iFixit has an "AI" chatbot thing. I'd love it if I could have just one day without having an overpriced text guesser shoved in my face

              @hacks4pancakes Would I be a hypocrite if I complained about the ads for Perplexity's Comet browser that appear when I launch the Perplexity app on my phone?

                    @lesley @hacks4pancakes I've been in those meetings. (Not recently, but back in the '00s and '10s). There aren't wodges of cash, but there's a lot of very cheap services on the table.

                        Intuit found it could only make it suck more by adding an LLM. Oh, and raising the price.

                            Not sure if this is what you're looking for but here's an example from Adobe InDesign

                            Link Preview Image
                            Daniel P. Huffman (@pinakographos@mapstodon.space)

                            Attached: 2 images A warning for Adobe #InDesign users. I recently updated my copy, and after preparing a document, the recipient of that document sent me the alt text that popped up on one of their figures. Apparently, by default, InDesign uses AI to generate (often hilariously wrong) alt text for images.

                                  @tk @hacks4pancakes Setting aside the complete inanity that you have to deal with this bullshit, I recommend going to Settings/Apps and uninstalling the "Notepad" app. The same old Notepad32.exe is still in your System32 folder, unaffected by the uninstall, and will run as expected -- without the Copilot nonsense.

                                  Or do what I did after a year of Windows 11 -- buy a new Framework laptop, put Ubuntu on it, and stop looking backward. So much less stress!

                                        @w_b @alice @Fpccraig My understanding is that they used to be reputable, but have been bought out and hollowed out. I was a Gandi customer, but the kept jacking prices on me.

                                        I switched to Porkbun, which are far from ideal, but at least seem to be an improvement over Gandi at the moment.

                                          @w_b no clue, but maybe one of my followers does.

                                          @alice @w_b Heh. Thought I was being considerate in dropping you from my reply to w_b (vaguely positive impression, but no actual knowledge—now made obsolete by xgranade’s informed reply).
