@ratfactor excellent post and I love the recent drawings you've put in them! I've also had to push back against this sort of connection to minimalism, I think it's for similar reasons that pmc is often linked to veganism, some people still believe that it means eating less things, and not different things.

@ratfactor o hai! i think i met you 20 years ago at some ruby conf. i showed you my dynamic tiling WM and you showed me your static tiling WM. you have a nice web site!
i like how well you laid out your goals and your reasoning. i don't think i can commit myself to that level of ascetism, but i do share the desire for depth over breadth.
my plan to get that is less well-defined, but i'm ok with that. since i just semi-retired, I think I'm back in the "should look at Shiny Things" phase again.

This resonated with me -

@ratfactor I LOVED this article, and your drawings. It feels quite lonely, though, which I presume is unintentional, but you only mention family once, and no other people. I thought this because your drawings feel a bit solarpunk, but there's no community.

@ratfactor
Totally in agreement. I share all of that with you.
My list is different. But we see the same.
So nice to know I'm not alone in holding my moral line, embracing simplicity and living in the joy of it. -

@ratfactor Interesting article.
You should read Conversing with Cage, an editing of John's interviews by Richard Kostelanetz.
https://archive.org/details/conversingwithca0000kost/page/n11/mode/2upWhile not discussing #AsceticComputing, his thoughts overlap with regards to considerations of systems; operations; and minimalism.
Such deliberations stuck with me prior to getting into coding in any case.
He repeatedly cites Thoreau as an influence, I reckon you would have clicked.
