It is not a referendum on joining the EU! Just on whether the negotiations should continue. The aim is to add democratic legitimacy to the process.

Iceland is already a member of the European Economic Area, and the Schengen Area. But not a member of the EU proper.

What this means is that Iceland constantly ends up having to implement EU regulations while not having any say in the legislative process.

Plus, becoming an EU Member State would mean Icelandic would become an official EU language. And Icelanders really care deeply about their language!

I adore Iceland - I've spent a lot of time working with Icelandic text. I have brilliant friends and colleagues in Iceland. I would absolutely love to have Iceland in the EU.

We're still going to beat them at Handball, though.
