ONE ATTACK IN THE MIDDLE EAST JUST PUT THE ENTIRE TECH INDUSTRY ON LIFE SUPPORT

Iran bombed Qatar's helium plant.
33% of global supply is gone.
(Ed : I maintain he still an
idiot )

@Powerfromspace1 oh talk about gouging. We have a MRI machine here and it *never* needs topping up because its a closed system.

@RueNahcMohr @Powerfromspace1 On the other hand, if you want a hard drive (not an SSD) in the next 2-5 years, buy it this month. (Modern hard disk drives are pressurized with heliumโthey used to use nitrogen but modern high capacity drives need smaller gas molecules between the read-write heads and the platter. *Might* work with hydrogen, but that requires a redesign so can't be deployed rapidly.)

@cstross @RueNahcMohr @Powerfromspace1 HDD prices are already soaring โ 2 years ago I paid 336โฌ for 20 TB, today 12 TB costs more than that.

@Powerfromspace1 Fortunately, to my knowledge, there is currently no particularly high demand for microchips worldwide, is there?

Here's who's bleeding right now:
South Korea โ 64.7% of all helium imported from Qatar ($226.9M). Samsung and SK Hynix fabs on a countdown clock.
Taiwan โ home to TSMC, makes 18% of global chips. Said "monitoring situation." Translation: quietly panicking.
Japan โ major chip fab and MRI manufacturer hub. First to run out if Qatar outage extends beyond 60 days.
Singapore โ regional semiconductor hub. Heavy Qatar helium dependency flagged by Scientific American.
India โ imported helium from Qatar for thousands of hospital MRI machines. MRI costs already rising, scan delays starting.
Germany โ hosts major industrial gas distributors (Linde HQ). Helium spot prices up 100% โ Linde, Air Liquide rationing supply.1/2
