The Roberts Court has completed its evisceration of the Voting Rights Act.

A successful fight for actual equal protection of the law - equal protection for African-Americans, other black and brown people, women, and LGBTQ+ folks - requires recognition of the way the original Constitution embedded white patriarchal power in American law. The civil rights struggles of the 20th and 21st centuries were to operationalize the new, different U.S. constitution, the one written by the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. 3/
Congress passed and reauthorized the Voting Rights Act based on its recognition that a lack of equal protection of the law can, and often does arise, without the intent of any specific person(s) to deny that equal protection. A lack of equal protection of the law much more often arises path-dependently, from inherited structures of power, privilege, and prejudice. 4/

The Civil War amendments to the U.S. Constitution and all the civil rights laws that have flowed from them were efforts to break up ossified hierarchies that result in a lack of equal protection of the law. 5/

In direct contradiction to history, law, and present reality, Alito, Thomas, Roberts, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett have decreed that even the post-Civil War Constitution enshrines white supremacy in the U.S. 1/ #LawFedi
@heidilifeldman thomas won't be happy until he's no longer allowed to vote.

Today the Roberts Court has invited the revitalization and entrenchment of a version of the U.S. Constitution that hundreds of thousands of people died to change. That is despicable. 6/6

Time to dismantle the supreme Court in favor of a court whose members are elected from and by the Courts of Appeal to serve short terms and be subject to the same ethics standards as other judges

@heidilifeldman Look at the congressional map. Not that many Democratic districts in the South. Lots of Republican districts in states with high population density and democratic majorities. Democrats have been fighting fire with fire. I guess it is time to turn up the volume. Republicans have not thought this through to the logical end point.
(Oh, and those 6 justices should be impeached for treason.)

@Sassinake @keithpjolley @heidilifeldman could have named that character "Clarence" ...

@heidilifeldman Thanks for the thread. Looks like it's (past) time to resurrect the civil rights movement of the '50s & '60s. Stunning how in the last decade we've lost 70 years of progress.

Alito’s opinion was drawn straight from the American tradition of racebaiting and justification at the heart of American history. How much difference is there between Alito and Pitchfork Ben Tillman? . . . And he [Senator John C. Spooner, of Wisconsin] said we had taken their rights away from them. He asked me was it […]

@heidilifeldman
What those who would not complain about restricting or removing the rights of others fail to comprehend is that it doesn't stop with one group.First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

@heidilifeldman my sister resigned from the Civil Rights Division at the DOJ when Roberts swept in under Reagan and began his lifelong assault on voting rights. She hated him even more than she hated Ken Starr and his drunken leak machine, Brett Kavanagh, who were down the hall at Kirkland and Ellis.
