FYI: a lot of this debt is owned by the Saudis and China. If either set a fire sale of their US bonds this evening, the US couldn't raise money on the bond market to service its debt. And goes out of business the morning.
Buying US bonds provides rich nations, more security than developing nuclear weapons - in real terms.
