@peteriskrisjanis I've never owned an i-phone. A friend loves them but has to keep buying a new one every year as the built in obsoletion kicks in. Despite the fact that he only uses the main features which are now available for a quarter of the price in android phones. Still -he's happy, poorer but happy! 🤭

That’s an excuse, at best. My dad is still using my iPhone 12 from five years ago quite happily. The only reason I upgraded from it was that they switched to USB-C two years ago.

@Soulshine @kibcol1049 if you upgrade to the top storage size I’d imagine it’ll be closer to £3k…

Not for me, thanks. But hey, I’m sure someone will love it.

Yeah, I feel bad for the people that love small phones as there just… aren’t many any more. I can see why Apple discontinued them (very low sales), but it’s a bummer.

I’ve got a 12 mini as a work phone (not connecting my personal device to Microsoft!) and as a second phone it’s great. I’ll be sad when it dies or ages out, as having two normal sized phones will be nasty.

Maybe Apple should try doing one small phone every 3-4 years. They’d probably sell well enough to be worth the effort, as people from the previous one or two generations would upgrade.

I used an iphone 3gs which I had since 2009 until last week. Home button is defect now, so I now put an iPhone 7 into operation, which I had in reserve since 2020, when my dad bought himself a new one.
But I dont do any internet with the phone. its only for calls, sms, photos, clock.
So no need for me to waste money and resources (I know there are cheap phones out there, but they still cost money.)

That’s honestly impressive. I thought a lot of countries were shutting down 3G.

All my arguments about why that’s a terrible idea fall apart if you don’t do anything on the Internet with it, so good on you for keeping tech going for that long!

Apple is preparing to fold the iPhone — whether or not anyone asked for it. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the device will open into an iPad mini–sized screen and pair luxe hardware with a sleeker design meant to make foldables feel stylish.
If it lands, it could amount to Apple’s most significant iPhone redesign in years — but is that enough to make you part with a fresh $2K (approx £1500)?

@cachondo @gareth @scrummy @Reddog @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis I have a 3 year or so cycle where I buy the latest phone, keep it for 3-4 years, then give it to Mum after buying latest model again. We did well last time round with the iPhone 11, I had it for 4 years and now Mum has had it for 3 years, always running latest iOS. I don't think it will get the new iOS though so decisions will need making end of the year.

I started with iphones, not knowing what they were, and iphones were walled garden enough to make mistakes and not crash the device. then when I truly understood how they function I ditched them. a computer is a computer and this includes smart phones. paying 4 times the price for a thing does the same things as other things under a different brand is beyond dumb. all apple users are in an abusive relationship (the company abusing the gullibility of the users)

                                    @gareth @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis

apple has been screwing their users for decades now and it has not affected their bottom line. examples include purposefully degrading battery life through programming, removing the 3.5 mm plug forcing users to buy $300 ear buds (that fall out of ears at the drop of a hat), a stylus that costs hundreds of dollars, and partnering with a company that drives their workers to suicide to the point nets had to be installed around the building. come the fuck on.

@gareth @peteriskrisjanis Amazing. I think that's an exception. But does he use it much, I suspect not.

@kibcol1049 @gareth @peteriskrisjanis This hasn’t been my experience at all. I’m on my 3rd iPhone, my first being the iPhone 6, then 11 and now 16. I have kept all of my iPhones for 5 years and have never upgraded because they stopped working or slowed down. I just feel like 5yrs is good enough value for me. At five years, reduced battery life is beginning to feel noticeable and enough improvements have been made for me to justify the upgrade.

@moelassus @gareth @peteriskrisjanis That's good. It's seems some have issues and some don't. It's the price which puts me off. Apple have in the past settled out of court for stealing technology from Android and vice versa. The net effect is I can get everything I want in a Samsung Android that costs a lot less than the i-phone and just as reliable.
