Apple is preparing to fold the iPhone — whether or not anyone asked for it.

@kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis I liked the art features that used to be front and center Apple. Now they’re available everywhere.
@Pineywoozle @peteriskrisjanis Exactly Piney, I don't use half the features on my cheap android phone. I played with the camera when I first got it, but now I just use the basic mode all the time. The built in calculator does things I've never heard of. Pretty much the same for all the apps. If I was a professional photographer or mathematician it would be different. 🤭

@kibcol1049 Yep. What an awful way to live one’s life.

Apple is preparing to fold the iPhone — whether or not anyone asked for it. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the device will open into an iPad mini–sized screen and pair luxe hardware with a sleeker design meant to make foldables feel stylish.
If it lands, it could amount to Apple’s most significant iPhone redesign in years — but is that enough to make you part with a fresh $2K (approx £1500)?@kibcol1049 hahahah 2k lol

100%. It is the inevitable, intended, outcome.
Far more than I'm willing to spend on a phone, and if'n my experience is anything to go by, you won't get much more than a year without problems
-
@Quasit Apple have, more parts to fail = more purchases by users = more profits!
-
I think Cory Doctorow had/has something to say about this.

@Soulshine @kibcol1049 if you upgrade to the top storage size I’d imagine it’ll be closer to £3k…
Not for me, thanks. But hey, I’m sure someone will love it.

@peteriskrisjanis I've never owned an i-phone. A friend loves them but has to keep buying a new one every year as the built in obsoletion kicks in. Despite the fact that he only uses the main features which are now available for a quarter of the price in android phones. Still -he's happy, poorer but happy! 🤭
@kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis
That’s an excuse, at best. My dad is still using my iPhone 12 from five years ago quite happily. The only reason I upgraded from it was that they switched to USB-C two years ago. -

Internal storage has been the biggest scam of all.

@Reddog @gareth @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis I have an iPhone 13 mini and it’s been trouble free. I’m going to keep it as long as it still works.

Yeah, I feel bad for the people that love small phones as there just… aren’t many any more. I can see why Apple discontinued them (very low sales), but it’s a bummer.I’ve got a 12 mini as a work phone (not connecting my personal device to Microsoft!) and as a second phone it’s great. I’ll be sad when it dies or ages out, as having two normal sized phones will be nasty.
Maybe Apple should try doing one small phone every 3-4 years. They’d probably sell well enough to be worth the effort, as people from the previous one or two generations would upgrade.

Look, I’m not judging. If someone wants to spend their own money on a new shiny toy every year, that’s their business. I wouldn’t, but if he’s doing that and is happy, fair enough.I just object to the excuses. If his phone is genuinely slowing down, he should try hard resetting it and testing it after installing a portion of his usual apps. Maybe one of them is misbehaving. Maybe he’s buying one with not enough storage for his needs and he’s filled it completely. But no major phone manufacturer would build in “planned obsolescence” on a year old device. Apart from being illegal, if they got caught (which let’s face it, they would!), it would destroy their reputation. There have been individual incidents with various companies over the years, and they’ve been publicised and crucified for them.

I used an iphone 3gs which I had since 2009 until last week. Home button is defect now, so I now put an iPhone 7 into operation, which I had in reserve since 2020, when my dad bought himself a new one.
But I dont do any internet with the phone. its only for calls, sms, photos, clock.
So no need for me to waste money and resources (I know there are cheap phones out there, but they still cost money.)
🥺
