Apple is preparing to fold the iPhone — whether or not anyone asked for it.

@Pineywoozle Yes, it sounds like it's all about profit to me. There's a good maxim for tech I believe in. "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!"
@kibcol1049 Sadly, not one they will probably ever follow

@Pineywoozle Not unless they can make a huge fortune out of it. 🤭

I saw someone with a well used folding smartphone. The 'fold' on that thing was a manky-arsed mess of (presumably) crunched glass in plastic.
@blueorangeblue @kibcol1049
They had to go and fix a problem that didn't exist
after all, devices aren't meant to last, they want you to constantly upgrade. Seems like a daft design to me, but then lots of people seem to want a folding smartphone. -

@kibcol1049 Yep. What an awful way to live one’s life.

@kibcol1049 wait wait wait.....text to speech doesn't help? I thought it was all point of genAI
@peteriskrisjanis I for one don't want my conversations out loud, come to think of it, no one wants to hear my rubbish.

@peteriskrisjanis I've never owned an i-phone. A friend loves them but has to keep buying a new one every year as the built in obsoletion kicks in. Despite the fact that he only uses the main features which are now available for a quarter of the price in android phones. Still -he's happy, poorer but happy! 🤭
@kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis I liked the art features that used to be front and center Apple. Now they’re available everywhere.

@Pineywoozle @peteriskrisjanis Exactly Piney, I don't use half the features on my cheap android phone. I played with the camera when I first got it, but now I just use the basic mode all the time. The built in calculator does things I've never heard of. Pretty much the same for all the apps. If I was a professional photographer or mathematician it would be different. 🤭

Apple is preparing to fold the iPhone — whether or not anyone asked for it. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the device will open into an iPad mini–sized screen and pair luxe hardware with a sleeker design meant to make foldables feel stylish.
If it lands, it could amount to Apple’s most significant iPhone redesign in years — but is that enough to make you part with a fresh $2K (approx £1500)?@kibcol1049 hahahah 2k lol

Far more than I'm willing to spend on a phone, and if'n my experience is anything to go by, you won't get much more than a year without problems
-
@Quasit Apple have, more parts to fail = more purchases by users = more profits!
-
I think Cory Doctorow had/has something to say about this.

@Soulshine @kibcol1049 if you upgrade to the top storage size I’d imagine it’ll be closer to £3k…
Not for me, thanks. But hey, I’m sure someone will love it.

That’s an excuse, at best. My dad is still using my iPhone 12 from five years ago quite happily. The only reason I upgraded from it was that they switched to USB-C two years ago. -

Internal storage has been the biggest scam of all.

@Reddog @gareth @kibcol1049 @peteriskrisjanis I have an iPhone 13 mini and it’s been trouble free. I’m going to keep it as long as it still works.
