listening to the latest Gorillaz album The Mountain, about 40 minutes in. I have mixed feelings about it. I like some of the songs a lot, The Mountain and The Moon Cave are great. a few of the other tracks were pretty good too. a lot of the songs are just kind of rolling by without leaving much of an impression. there's a bit of a murky quality to the emotions in a lot of the songs, I'm picking up a lot of melancholy and generally sad vibes but not in a very clear or directed sense. there's also some very strange musical choices, like the autotune on 2-D's vocals sounds like shit, idk if they meant that to be humorous or what but it's not working for me. there's definitely a lot of good ideas and performances in this album but they're getting bogged down a lot by a bunch of mediocre tracks and unclear direction of the album. curious to know what others think of this one.

Okay it picked up a lot in the last 1/3 of the album. Definitely enjoyed a lot more of the tracks in that leg. I'll have to listen to the whole thing again to form my opinion fully. Overall I think I just enjoy some of the songs a lot and a decent number of them I just don't care about that much. The album is definitely thematically coherent and interesting, just has some lulls and weak points for me I guess.
