Eleven U.S. cities will host World Cup games this summer, which is expected to generate $11B for FIFA.

The cities get little in return. They do not see a slice of game-day revenues from ticket sales, concessions and merchandise, or parking.

@ProPublica There is only one thing to be done: to boycott the World Cup: due to Trump and due to Infantino, both criminals - imho.

@ProPublica Well, they may not see much in the way of revenues, but imagine the prestige that comes with that "Peace Prize".

@ProPublica @HoustonChron Excellent reporting. THIS is why the print media is so important. One unmentioned effect on local economies is the loss of revenue directly related to the fear of the Trump administration's unfettered treatment of immigrants.

@mrose @ProPublica That’s difficult to predict. Back in 2011, Super Bowl 45 was held in Arlington, TX. The city took on a lot of debt to fund a new stadium, widen streets, and a lot more. Then immediately before the event, the city basically froze over, and that region of Texas doesn’t have good infrastructure to handle icy roads. People spent on hotels, but that was about it. Other businesses didn’t see any significant boost in spending.

The World Cup is during the summer, so no freezing, but most of the areas which will be hosting are likely to be in severe drought conditions. Wildfires are likely.

@ProPublica cities make money from ticket sales you say? So that's why ticket prices are in the thousands, just for the cheapest seats.

Cities do NOT get a slice of ticket sales, not even as organizers, is what the article and the post say.

My city is scheduling volunteer disaster responders ahead of time. We don’t have enough police and EMTs even if they’re all rescheduled for it.

I must've been pretty tired this morning.
