#BikeNite A2 the seatpost clamp bolt broke and my saddle sank/slid out from under me. Luckily I was not turning and had both hands on the handlebars, managed to stop safely and pickup the clamp parts. Unfortunately my kid was 15min late by the time I had rigged up a strap to hold the saddle over the post (had no tool to take the post out!) and rode mostly standing for that last ~2mi.

@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A2. I rode a cruiser with a coaster brake and no front brake exclusively in college and the only bike shop was an hour and a half car ride away. Somewhere in senior year, my chain started popping off, which meant that in order to stop, I had to use my shoe, or, if I was going downhill, find a soft place to land.

A3. Yes, that's happened to me a few times when I have ridden too fast over a hard-to-see small kerb without lifting myself in time. It's quite close to home though, so I can usually bang the nose of the saddle down and get back OK.

I re-tightened it with my multi-tool and rode to a nearby bike shop to ask if anything was wrong. They asked me how much I tightened the saddle clamp, and upon hearing "5 Nm or so," they were like "Aha! That's most likely too loose." They got the right torque spec for me and tightened it accordingly.

@xtaran @bikenite A2. A couple of less-common failures:
* Spokes pulled eyelets through rim
* Spokes pulled through hub flange
* Cracked saddle rail
* Crashed with car, fork broke at steerer tube!
* Headtube cracked over time (aluminum frame, as discussed last week)
* My partner had a Mavic hub death squeal. Something happens with the palls in the freehub that makes a terrible sound. -

I tend to mash more than I spin, and I was even worse about that when I was younger.
One day, starting from a standstill, standing on the pedal as usual and probably placing too much force on the handlebars - they snapped.I walked in with the pieces to the LBS and just asked for a new handlebar as if it was just another Wednesday.
As an aside - which doesn't fit the question because firstly it didn't happen to me (I just happened to be nearby and saw it), and secondly _technically_ could be described as a "flat", was someone in a (somewhat slow) social ride who had the front tube blowout with such vigor that the tube somehow managed get stuck between the wheel and the brakes or fork (or both), locking up the wheel. We might just have been going slow enough that the rider managed to avoid getting literally thrown over the handlebars, but he did come down hard in any case.
I didn't know a tube could do that...@parsley @ascentale @xtaran @bikenite Did your shop take pictures of your stuff and share it on social media? (I found out mine did... deeming me their "torture tester" and noting I was a middle aged woman...)

A2: not mine, but years ago on a club run a school friend's (aluminium) handlebars sheared off next to the stem just riding along. He managed to stop safely and was fine (could have been much worse!). Luckily his dad was the ride leader so sorted out getting him home safely.

@ascentale@sfba.social @xtaran@chaos.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social My former Streetmachine GT (the older steel-framed model) suffered a catastrophic failure of the main frame tube after about 47,000 miles of use. At first I thought there was something wrong with the front tyre - the bike just felt non-specically funny. After stopping several times to investigate and finding nothing, I started off uphill and accordingly gave a harder shove on the pedal to get rolling. Felt the seat move in a weird way, so dismounted and discovered the Crack-of-Doom
while looking for problems with the seat brackets or rear suspension...
Fortunately I was only a couple of miles from home, so got back by walking and carefully rolling down hills. The crack had enlarged to comedy proportions by the time I got back, with the front of the bike wandering in a different direction to the rear. (The break would be in compression while I was astride the bike, but was subject to all sorts of twisting forces while wheeling.)
As the bike was beyond economic repair, with the suspension and drivetrain well worn and coming up for replacement, I bought a shiny new GTe model (sadly at post-Brexit prices), and transplanted most of the accessories. The front boom from the old bike found a home with someone who'd bought a bike from a shorter rider and needed one with a little more extension, so that part of the frame lives on.

threw bits all throughout the mechanism. big headache.Florian sent all the stuff i needed to repair it, no charge. & explained how to set the timing on the gears.
Else, I'd have never figured it out. lol

I still wonder whether he just under-specced them and discovered that 1% of users were stronger than expected.

This was a terrible mistake. That thing ate tubes like whoah. -

@moz @cpm @ascentale @bikenite: Funny that SchumpfDrives come up in this thread. Got one, too, and it's still working fine. It's though a rather new, Kwiggle built one. Florian still builds one type himself: Those for unicycles. Met him at last year's SPEZI (special bike fair in Germany).
