Given that the freewheel of my Brompton Electric G-Line started failing today and the cassette was spinning without the wheel in both directions...
Q2. What _unexpected_ part failures have you had on your cycle(s)? (Ordinary flat tires do not count.

@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A2. During a multi-day trip away from home, two spokes on the rear wheel snapped. It happened to me again afterward.
Went to my local shop to get it completely re-spoked. Since than the gearing on my Enviolo 360 hasnβt been working properly. Three different bike shops havenβt been able to fix it yet. -

A2. My very first failure, a long time ago, was a cotter pin on a crank. I can't have been more than 8 or 9 and I had no idea what had happened. It was my first bike, rented for me by my mother for the summer, and I was scared to mention it, so I rode around going clonk, clonk, clonk for a few days until one of my friends noticed and asked his dad to fix it.

@ascentale@sfba.social @xtaran@chaos.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social A2: May not be totally unexpected, but my saddle suddenly tilted backwards while I was riding relatively fast. Sure scared the heck out of me! As it turned out, I hadn't tightened the saddle nearly as much as I was supposed to (5 Nm vs 12 Nm)... #BikeNite #MastoBikes #BikeTooter
@daihard @ascentale @xtaran @bikenite
A3. Yes, that's happened to me a few times when I have ridden too fast over a hard-to-see small kerb without lifting myself in time. It's quite close to home though, so I can usually bang the nose of the saddle down and get back OK.
Edit: typo.

@ascentale
A2:Brand new one for me this week:
in a nutshell (long story, else)
lower idler on rear derailleur seized up. the tension idler.
on this derailleur, it's a sealed bearing cartidge style. Not bushings.
Too much winter road treatment slop. bearing froze.
This was a 'full-stop, cannot continue' failure. Took me a while to figure it out.
thankfully, the weather was nice & sunny.

A2. Domino effect, had to laugh abt this personal misfortune recently so have one on me too ...
[.|.] - prev outing - chain-ring guard came loose, removed for future refixing. Forgot, then mislaid it...
[:|:] - first steep section on next outing, shoe-lace gets snagged on top chain-wheel sprocket, forcing stop.
[:.|:.] - while retying, still straddling bike, it begins to fall, I grab handlebar hard in unusual place - happens to be the battery V meter. Nasty smell and no assistance.
[::|::] - ride the bike back to base, unladen, so decide to take a shorter more scenic trail. This involves riding over fallen trees. Small branch snags in wheel and trashes mudguard. Limp rest of way back.
[:.:|:.:] already had enough, I give-up the ride on the only non-rain day for a while, eat rations and surrender to another trip in rain another day [see A1]
[:::|:::] you get this

@silvermoon82 @oheso @yantor3d @ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A2 follow-up: Brompton G-Lines are known for their right pedal (and only the right one) to come loose after a while if you hadn't fastened it more than ex-works. Happened to me after maybe 1500km. Knew about it and noticed the loosening screw before it fell off.

@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite I guess the third time you snap a Hunt Wheels axle you can't call it 'unexpected', but that's been my most regular occurance over the past couple of years. I've have 2 seatpost clamps go in 18 months too. All rather boring really. A2 #BikeNite

#BikeNite A2: I've had the opposite: The hub seized completely. No cassette freewheel, the wheel wouldn't turn. I loosened the skewer so I could walk the bike to the LBS.
I noticed resistance to pedalling over a few kilometres and finally stopped, in the dark, at a park bench under a street light, to pop the wheel out, thinking some debris was caught in the hub.
Bought a new wheel, cheaper than getting the LBS to lace in a new hub, and faster than doing it myself.

@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A2: the pinion gears in my Mt Drive shattered. Which turned out to be a known issue and it was replaced under warranty. Luckily I could pop a standard BB in and keep riding.
Technically One Less Ute failed in an unexpected way, but the design was "I wonder what I can get away with" so it was doomed from the start. A 25kg Long John is optimistic, making the load bed 1.5m long and putting 150kg on it is really pushing the envelope.
@moz
failed mountain drive?i installed (fsvo) a lot of schlumpf drives of various flavors back in Florian's day.
Florian insisted all the drives shifted fine & safely under load.
Me?
wasn't convinced.the only one we ever had fail was a mountain drive.
& I know the client would shift under hard loading.
They alwys felt (to me) like they took a bit'o time & movement to mesh properly.

@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A2. Other than me, Iβve broken a derailure cable (annoying), and broke two chain links (the first I got a ride home, the second was a long was a long walk in cleats). My bike has been rideable after several crashes, so annoying but no breakage). #BikeNight

@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A2. One of my cranks fell off once. Couldn't find the bolt - I think it had come loose and fallen off miles earlier.
Flat tires don't count, but what about the time I had a flat tire and my hand pump _fell apart_? Don't buy cheap tools...
@yantor3d @ascentale @xtaran @bikenite oh, Iβve had two flats with non working pumps, two more long walks homeβ¦ #BikeNight

PS:yes, shattered planetary gear.
threw bits all throughout the mechanism. big headache.Florian sent all the stuff i needed to repair it, no charge. & explained how to set the timing on the gears.
Else, I'd have never figured it out. lol

#BikeNite A2 the seatpost clamp bolt broke and my saddle sank/slid out from under me. Luckily I was not turning and had both hands on the handlebars, managed to stop safely and pickup the clamp parts. Unfortunately my kid was 15min late by the time I had rigged up a strap to hold the saddle over the post (had no tool to take the post out!) and rode mostly standing for that last ~2mi.

@ascentale @xtaran @bikenite A2. I rode a cruiser with a coaster brake and no front brake exclusively in college and the only bike shop was an hour and a half car ride away. Somewhere in senior year, my chain started popping off, which meant that in order to stop, I had to use my shoe, or, if I was going downhill, find a soft place to land.

@etp@indieweb.social @ascentale@sfba.social @xtaran@chaos.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social Glad you were able to get home without much more trouble. I re-tightened it with my multi-tool and rode to a nearby bike shop to ask if anything was wrong. They asked me how much I tightened the saddle clamp, and upon hearing "5 Nm or so," they were like "Aha! That's most likely too loose." They got the right torque spec for me and tightened it accordingly.

@xtaran @bikenite A2. A couple of less-common failures:
* Spokes pulled eyelets through rim
* Spokes pulled through hub flange
* Cracked saddle rail
* Crashed with car, fork broke at steerer tube!
* Headtube cracked over time (aluminum frame, as discussed last week)
* My partner had a Mavic hub death squeal. Something happens with the palls in the freehub that makes a terrible sound. -

Torque wrenches are not something I have yet had to deal with.
