I don't know why they have this huge blindspot for mastodon, but it is hilarious to see that every time they talk about the viable microblogging platforms, they will list every possibility except fediverse ones

and to clarify: I'm not saying mastodon is 100% perfect or for everyone.

Maybe some of them have tried mastodon and don't like it for whatever reason, sure!

but my point is that they don't even mention it as a possibility.

it's not that they don't think mastodon is bad for whatever reason, it's that they don't think about mastodon at all

@foone mostly when I try to promote fedi there people yell at me so I stopped 😞

One time I even had someone have a go at me because fedi is apparently anti queer? That was pretty bizarre

@eniko @foone I wonder if instead of actively promoting the Fediverse, simply commenting in these threads with something «I'm not worried about the BlueSky collapse, it won't affect my Mastodon use», like, making it personal instead of a recommendation for others, would be more effective.

@foone I think they just don't see it as a viable platform because it costs money, and doesn't make it, and with our capitalist training that's just something that shouldn't exist. If it at least was spending VC money, and promising future income. But no, we are literally running "at a loss" (if you only care for money).

@foone I came to the conclusion that some people are simply ideologically opposed to the Fediverse. That billionaire-owned platforms aren't a necessary evil, but their preferred choice. I guess they feel pinko otherwise? 😄

It should at least decrease the complaints. «Yeah, I'm not suggesting you come over, it's just where I'm at.»

The antiqueer thing is weird, but in these cases I always try to remember that each of us has a very different Fedi experience, and there ARE queer-unfriendly accounts, especially on the larger instances —plus of course the usual Nazi-adjacent instances who are more than happy to roam around and harrass people “just for the fun of it”.

@foone I think people, especially in the USA, want a corporate for profit structure running things and a manager they can yell at. They don't trust a community project run by volunteers without a corporation behind it. They automatically don't take it seriously. They think that's a nice hobby for nerds, but not something they can really use.

@oblomov @eniko @foone sadly these days the choice of social network for many is almost religious kind of question, so they will see it as heresy when you say something works better and attack you anyway

it's also not hip (it doesn't look like twitter 100%) and hard to use (choosing instance requires user to have ability to think and ex-x users prefer to delegate it to billionaires who know what's best for them)

@foone I think people in general are still operating on a centralized network model and would like to use something that is more streamlined and normie-friendly. People ought to learn old-school web tech and undo years of social media conditioning.

@foone because mastodon has some very clear technical limitations (especially the every server blocks how it wants instead of I subscribe to the block lists of my choice) and issues (unified visibility!) that make it not that great for a certain type of use

@somekindofgarf @foone the problem is if you start talking about what isn’t right here, people take offense, pretend that bugs are features to them and it becomes very exhausting and socially unpleasant

@foone Not just bluesky users. Also everyone researching social media and harms social media use can cause.

and to clarify: I'm not saying mastodon is 100% perfect or for everyone.

Maybe some of them have tried mastodon and don't like it for whatever reason, sure!

but my point is that they don't even mention it as a possibility.

@foone Yeah, in the furry fandom specifically, there was this really popular instance that a decent chunk of people were in, then there were problems, and the owner got mad at the users and shut it down suddenly, no warning

And it seems to have burned a LOT of peeps, I still see it mentioned as a "never joining Mastodon" reason to this day
