I'm reading that it is a bad idea to switch ActivityPub server software on the same domain, it messes up syncing between servers. Is it still a bad idea if there is no intention to maintain followers or posts?

It's fine. There are a couple of PieFed servers that used to be Lemmy.

@iiogama I've read keeping the same signing key is most important, but I've never tried changing software.

@julian @iiogama mastodon would not refresh the seever keys automatically and drop all posts from the new server until the key is manually refreshed.  This was an old problem and I don't tested it in the last years.

If you manage to import the cryptographic keys of all users and the instance actor, then it shouldn't be an issue either way.
