When ICE started ramping up their attacks on immigrants, they said, "We're going after the murderers and rapists!🤡" They used that consent to lock up 100K people, fewer than 5% of whom have a violent conviction.

If you understand that, you can understand 400K innocent people in pretrial detention.

There's a whole genre of YouTube videos that are just "White presenting lady loses her iPhone, accuses the closest Black man to her of stealing it."

      Seriously.

If she hadn't found her phone, she would have called 911. And in many places, the Black man would have been arrested, *with no evidence*🤡

      https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nXzTFhN74xE

If the Black man accused of stealing the phone is not rich, he can be in jail for *over a year* before he even gets the chance to talk to a judge and tell them that he is clearly innocent, he could not have taken the phone, hotel security footage will show that, he had no phone when he was arrested.

The white man in this video is not innocent. He is guilty.

He was not in general population Rikers. He was in protective custody.

He was not on Rikers for a year. He was only there for 60 days.

Think about that when you think of falsely accused Black men getting *over a year* on Rikers.

          None of this is necessary.

We don't need 100K people in ICE detention.

We don't need 400K people in pretrial detention.

It's all just fascism. Racism is fascism practiced on Black people first.

If we had cared more when it was mostly anti-Black racism, We wouldn't be building ICE warehouses now.

@mekkaokereke and we can now say that less than 2% of those detained by ICE have committed rapes or homicides.

(I know you know. That’s for today’s studio audience, just in case.)

Funny how much safer we aren’t.

@mekkaokereke and those who connect the dots between the European fascism of the 1930s and 1940s with American Jim Crow both before and after the European brand have a point.

Those of us white people who keep saying, “This isn’t who we are” must truly grate on the ears of those who actually know our history. 😕

@mekkaokereke I like how you phrased that: "Racism is fascism practiced on black people first." That is so true and it is true for so many of the other -isms, too, like anti-feminism, anti-LGBTQIA+-ism... It's all about a false sense of superiority of some ppl over other ppl on the basis of characteristics those ppl were born with and them consequently feeling a right and need to dominate and suppress other ppl on a general and absolute level. That's exactly what fascism is.

You're correct in an even more literal sense than you might realize.

On German nazi fascism literally being copied from US racism.

@jeffjarvis@mastodon.social @klausfiend@dcerberus.com @inthehands The saying I coined is "Racism is just fascism practiced on Black people first." This isn't a metaphor. It's literally what happened. The Nazi Nuremberg laws were based on US Jim Crow laws and Federal Indian laws. Hitler got the idea that it really would be possible to ethnically cleanse Germany, from how the US ethnically cleansed Native Americans. Hitler referred to Ukraine as "our frontier," and referred to Jews, Poles, and Ukrainians, as "our Indians"

So racism really is fascism for Black people first.

When we talk about transphobia AKA "fascism for trans people" preceding "fascism for everyone" the clearest example is nazi book burnings. Lots of people know that fascists burned books before world war 2. Fewer people know which books were being burned. (Yes, I know that many people on Mastodon are fully aware of which books were burned, and why. But some people are reading this for the first time).

All of this got so much worse when we allowed for-profit companies to run prisons.

There's an excellent exploration of the cross-fertilization of US and Nazi racism/fascism in Siddhartha Mukkerherjees's The Gene. Not what I was expecting, but devastating.
