@meganmariehart You're posting links to the shows, and you seem to be reasonably well connected on the Fediverse - you could pick one to leave out (together with the theatre's media team) and they could check their analysis tools to see how much of a dent that makes to website traffic.
@patrick Yeah. That would have been the way to do it if I was smart.
Oh well, what's done is done. Thanks!

… and opera is primarily a live art form, so its market share is so small as to be essentially unmeasurable. I never bothered to find out how many people I reach vs how many interactions a post gets. I really couldn’t care less!) Brands and “Influencer”-minded people, even people just used to commercial socials testing the fediverse might feel like it is not working for them and leave again, so I was wondering about the *potential* reach of a toot.
4/7@meganmariehart I'm a novelist. I enjoy Mastodon as a water cooler experience with people in my various communities, with hastags being useful. Not interested in trying to flog my books here, or seeing any others who do so.

… to demonstrate that Fediverse posts are worth the time and effort. Perhaps there is also an argument for a feature request: maybe there should be audience metrics for toots?! Though I imagine that could be difficult due to Federation. Again, I have no idea if one already gets numbers and insight by running an instance.)
Perhaps we can move beyond numbers in the long run, but for now, I fear people enjoy them even if they gain nothing from them. Kinda like a game highscore, I suppose.

@meganmariehart When running an instance, it’s possible to retrieve the number of times or number of users that have viewed the post directly on that instance.
But you don’t see the number of views on the other instances the post has reached.

@meganmariehart I am reading your posts carefully.
Sadly, it's far too far to travel from Greifswald to Darmstadt, but I'm really envious of the programme at your theatre.@jakmarcin Thank you! Do you go to Theater Vorpommern? I auditioned there years ago, nothing came of it though. I have fond memories of the region and salty liquorice!

@meganmariehart All good!

I like that you're thinking about these matters and I appreciate your presence here. Nice insights, and good advertising (though I'm still more likely to end up in the Staatstheater Wiesbaden, even though it's a longer distance. Old habits etc etc) -
@linos Thank you! That’s apparently how Das Opernmagazin got on here, @opernmagazin !

@meganmariehart Why do you use THE IMPERATIVE FORM IN UPPERCASE when you post something?
Do you know the word "please"?
Do you have to SHOUT orders to strangers when you conduct an experiment?

@simon_brooke Fair, thank you for your reply!

I can't see your post and am way to what ever to read all the rest of your 🧵 ..
Not sure what you want to achive.
Yes we do have some federation statistics in at least some of our backends. friendica servers for example display the amount of platforms, server and people they found in the fedi.
Than there is the part that we don't like the standard fashion influencer who treat us like sheep to heard or cows to milk.
Of course there are business models to think of, but there are a whole lot of middle men that need to jump on the train. An important part of the enshitification talk by @pluralistic is about all this. No clicks you can buy, no algorithm you can buy, no data you can buy to groom your victims.
Like to say, we created this for us and people like you.

Maybe I'm very strange but my metric for a post "doing well" is replies not likes or boosts.
A good post spawns a million threads and subthreads.
However, I'm on social media to ... socialize (crazy right?)
People who view social media as a publicity tool don't reply to posts, they don't even read their own replies. It's like they aren't even here.
Sad that on places like X/twitter replies were seen as a negative: a sign that people were angry at you. Dysfunctional.

@futurebird @meganmariehart 100%, getting many likes is in some sense satisfying, but one engaged reply is gratifying.

@futurebird @futurebird @meganmariehart well lots of replies with few likes and boosts
it kind of annoyed me that "ratio" shifted meaning to just getting more likes than someone after awhile though

@meganmariehart
One of the many reasons I like Mastodon is that there are no brands and influencers. I follow people who share my interests. Sure they have an influence and sometimes someone will advise I use/don't use a particular product but that's based on their own experience not the £$ they are being paid. If any professional influencers do show up on my timeline they'll be blocked.@pthane Yes, I would probably block them too. It would be great if we could live in a world without advertising! There is a difference between advertising that tries to trick people to spend money on something they don’t need in order to make a profit, and advertising that informs the public about nice things. Such as a nearby performance that you might otherwise easily miss! Thank you for your reply!

@meganmariehart I usually forget to use hashtags, and my posts don't get a lot of views. Of course anecdotes are not data.

@meganmariehart That's a great question! It's interesting to see how different strategies impact reach. I'm really curious about your findings—what have you noticed so far?

@maharanisantoso Waaaaay more interactions than I expected! Most of them have been positive, but I also had to learn that bursting out of my own comfy bubble exposed me to not-so-nice people I didn’t even know were on here.

@Megan Marie Hart well the more people you get in contact to the higher the possibility some of them are ungood ..

@DavidBridger I like that! Do you have readers who interact with you on Mastodon? I’m not trying to sell anything either. I see my posts about upcoming performances as public announcements and try to make them informative: what, when, where, who. But then again, I enjoy the luxury of not having to sell tickets. I get the same fee whether 50 or 5000 people come. (Although I prefer the latter!

@metalbrawler I wanted to test the potential reach of a post without hashtags, basically just for the sake of discussion. My home theater has a Mastodon account since 2022 but never posted anything! Perhaps I can convince them to get active if I can show them a posts potential, and maybe other theaters and artists will join. Fingers crossed!

Thank you!@meganmariehart @metalbrawler The purpose of hashtags is to tag posts on a specific topic so that someone can find them—outside of the timeline, of course. I use both, depending on what I want to see.
