      @alice Have a couple things that require interwebs access (e.g. home solar), so I created a separate VLAN for the Internet of Shit stuff to minimize impact to my home network.
      I dread the day I have to replace my old TV - my plan is to buy a large computer monitor instead though I expect it will be more expensive.

        @alice

        There are so very many modern "conveniences" I feel deeply grateful to not have.

        I am very glad to have a stand mixer and a fridge and running water, those are pretty damn convenient.

          We have several boxes of oldish DVDs and none have a commercial...I don't remember seeing ads on DVDs.

          @SnowyCA we've got a bunch of secondhand DVDs, and none of the older ones have ads, but the closer you get to like the 2000s, the worse the ads get.

            @eestileib Yes but there is no good reason for any of those to connect to the Internet

                @jerbear @cavyherd @alice

                My running water _is_ actually connected to the internet now 😆.

                New construction in an area with water conservation rules, I can check usage of hot and cold water on my phone.

                I will never ever buy a chef's knife with firmware though.

                  @jerbear
                  I can think of some reason I might want some appliances to connect to the network (not necessarily the Internet) if only capitalism didn't take that as an excuse to prevent me having control of those devices.

                        @roknrol @alice I knew when my induction hob wanted to connect to my wifi, that things got out of hand.

                        @vger my thermostat wanted to connect to the internet so it could receive temperature instructions from corporate during hot/cold surges...not to help me, but to make me less comfortable so they could make more money.

                        I figured out how to convince it I was a technician and told it there was no internet.
