Our normally bucolic existence here was violently shattered last night. Around midnight came a riot of loud noises and fierce roars. I switched the back lights on to see a massive cougar take down an adult black tail deer, not 20 feet from the kitchen window.
Shitting bricks I fumbled to find my camera and try to grab a few shots. Most were badly out of focus but this one with cougar's jaws firmly clamped on the the neck of the deer is at least discernible. The cougar stood there frozen in that position for around 10 minutes while the deer slowing stopped quivering.
The fella then dragged his meal back into the woods behind the house.
I am still a bit rattled by it. I've not told the wife as she will surely never step outside again....
