Just finished reading Sinclair Lewis’s It Can’t Happen Here written in 1935. Its premise and events about a fascist government taking power in the United States strikingly correspond to today’s events.
I don’t think it would’ve had nearly the impact for me if we hadn’t been seeing the ICE occupation (akin to the Minute Men in the book) here in Minnesota.
If it ends with a note of hope is up to the reader. But it does end with resolute resistance.

You might also be interested in Prophet Song by Paul Lynch, which felt like day by day in Minnesota this year. Very emotionally difficult book to read. Set in Ireland. Won the Booker Prize.
