did you check out the 1 bit computer, its got an assembler.
it has instructions, you can sequence into a program, but its a state machine. with instructions.

I cant get over how cool it is for
a) sitting _RIGHT_ON_ the grey line between processor and state machine
b) having a no-firmware, no aux microcontroller, serial loader.
c) its speed, even built like that, over 4MHz!!!!
I have a plan for an ALU to do sometime. any math function! (constrained to 2 bits in and 2 bits out)
