We just got a report on the “Puerto Ricans are not USians” comment made by one of our users. Resolved it immediately. And I’m answering here just so the person reporting it can reach out if they want.

1- Rejection of the American (as in people from the USA) label by Puerto Ricans is a standard position by people seeking independence. And it is a valid one.

Puerto Ricans have their own culture and identity despite the 100+ years of being under USA’s dominion. 1/

2- What we as moderators keep seeing is outsiders jump into this conversation and immediately confuse this position with the American (as in people from the USA) far right trying to redefine what it means to be American (as in people from the USA).

There is a distinction. Subtle to the average non PRican person. But it’s there. 2/

3- this isn’t a policing on how *all* Puerto Ricans should feel

There are people who feel internally like a tug of war between both identities.

There are people who feel at peace embracing both.

        And that’s fine.

If anything, policing over the Puerto Rican identity is done by the pro-statehood side of things because Puerto Ricans seeking independence while living abroad directly disprove what they believe.

        3/

Hope this helped. And if it didn’t, you can ask questions directly. Publicly or via DM. Doesn’t matter. 4/4

@leni I’ll take any teaching opportunity I can get. Lord knows we need it now more than ever. 😅

As an update: this was all resolved. It was a huge misunderstanding.

I’ll take any opportunity to teach people about this though.

@Jdm2 @leni it was me, I totally misread absolutely everything I took what the other person was saying I took the not Us'ians part and mistook as a white person saying Puerto Ricans aren't allowed.. I misread that way around and then realised after the fact I got it all wrong. I immediately DM'd apologizing.

@Jdm2 @leni I'm thankful it's ended up as a learning occasion.. on my own part as well that I am caring with reporting but I do drastically misread I need to remember.. and I let that botch me up this time in reporting. I'm very thankful it was recoginised the way I mistook things and was understood and my apology accepted. But it could of so gone wrong. Luckily there was in no way either party would of suspended over that but it so could of if it involved m.s or so.

@Jdm2 😅 I hate when they say we "are Americans." That hasn't been my lived experience. Not just because of "othering" but because it dismisses how I even got to the US and how traumatic it was to be forced to assimilate or face angry United Statians. I had the immigrant experience minus the visa: all the green card comments, teachers who did nothing, micro aggressions, segregation, the ignorant questions from history teachers, my family being broken apart, losing my support system as a child...

@Jdm2 I am embarrassed to admit that I have known very little but the extreme basics about Puerto Rico until very recently (and even now it's not like I know ... that much more), so people like you and posts like these are extremely informative. Thanks.
