Okay I’m going to ask for help, which is rare for me and I should do that more often.

I’ve had this idea knocking around in my head forever. I want to get a nice notebook/journal and turn it into a “spell book” (fully fictional for fun). What’s stopped me was I keep wanting some examples of spell circles and runes and stuff as inspiration.

Does anyone have any examples or sources (historical or otherwise) as inspiration?

@bearmine They're super old school at this point, but I have a soft spot for the Ultima IV and V books. I found them here:

      https://www.c64sets.com/set.html?id=7&title=Ultima%20IV:%20Quest%20of%20the%20Avatar

      https://www.c64sets.com/set.html?id=123&title=Ultima%20V:%20Warriors%20of%20Destiny

Ultima III is a good ref too: https://www.c64sets.com/set.html?id=30&title=Ultima%20III:%20Exodus

I personally have am super nostalgic for IV’s spell book. Wish I had kept them now!

@bearmine If you want I can dig up the early D&D manuals that had some examples magic circles. They're pretty basic compared to most of today, in the '70s, but they're not hard to draw.

@bearmine Oh, and if you like things a little creepier, I think there might be some in my Call of Cthulhu book, but I'll have to double check that they aren't just calligraphy from Hebrew or Greek

@Canageek both the dnd and this would be cool. I’d appreciate it if it’s not too much trouble.

@bearmine I just need to remember to do it when I get home from work, I probably should not be pirating RPG Source books on my work laptop

@bearmine The rune book my mom gave me, alongside her old set of runes, is The Book of Runes by Blum. I never felt particularly drawn to his interpretations overall, but it was informative and pretty no nonsense. It's straightforward and easy to use
