A wave of darkness is spreading across Mars. These images show dramatic changes to the Martian surface over the past 50 years, as volcanic dust blows through an ancient impact basin.

In the 1950s, astronomers noticed a seasonal "wave of darkening" on Mars. Some interpreted it as springtime growth of plants. One prominent scientist reported that the "wave" appeared organic, similar to lichen on Earth.

      Alas...it was just more dust.

This is a map of Mars by the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers, published in Sky & Telescope in 1954.

The Space Age completely transformed our understanding of the solar system.

Our instruments have improved, but wishful thinking remains a fixture of human behavior. That's why scientists tend to take every claim about "new evidence of alien life" with a massive dose of skepticism.
