Somewhere in the late 90s local soda brand Frisco had guarana in their lineup as well, but that tasted rank. I however quickly learned it had very high caffeine content and downing a 1.5l bottle gave a nice sugar+caffeine high. Those were soon pulled as the actual energy drinks surfaced and they realised they could put a huge markup on the stuff.
But yeah, this was surprisingly okay for guarana, although not really anything to write home about. But apparently enough to rant on the Fediverse.

@apzpins I fell in love with Josta when it came out. That was a guarana soda. I like picking up a Guarana soda every so often , some of them taste close enough to Josta that I get that nostalgic kick.

@gloriouscow The local Frisco branded was not that good, it was hard to quantify what it tasted like, but I guess they had way too much guarana in it, compared to this Brazilian soda that does a lot better job at it.

Josta was a bit of an acquired taste. Pepsi visited our high school and handed every kid a can of Josta and a can of Surge which they were introducing at the same time.
Kids generally liked the Surge but most were put off by Josta - so I thought it was funny to collect everyone's unwanted cans of Josta and filled my backpack with them.
I started drinking them ironically, then I started to legitimately like it.

@gloriouscow I guess it was the same thing with very early energy drinks. Most of them were what you'd an an acquired taste at best, but the caffeine hit hard for the teenagers who hadn't developed coffee habit yet. The oldest local brand that I can remember was Battery energy drink, that was guarana based. They've since laced it with other flavors to make it taste less like ass.

@apzpins Hrm, I'm reading Surge was a Coca-Cola product and Josta was Pepsi, so it might have been a marketing company or distributor instead of Pepsi.
Still wild that our school allowed people to roll up and give all the kids a ton of caffiene, during school hours. But that's America for you.

@gloriouscow I think that was a lot of the world back in the days. The oddest ones are like rulers and other stuff with insurance company logos on them. I didn't even know what the companies where back when they just decided to hand out stuff like that for no apparent reason. I wonder if they just asked the principle of they'd take like 500 free rulers or something to be distributed to the kids or if the box of rulers also came with a ticket to a nice golfing trip. Who knows.

@apzpins If I had to put Brazil in a can this would be it. They have other brands over there, but this is the most common that I could see. I really like it but don't have it often, just to keep it feeling special.

@tuomas_h Judging from the comments I see others seem to have a special place in their hearts for this too. It's definitely not bad, but I went in expecting some exotic fruit taste and it was more like 7up-ish but sweeter.
I'll have to be on a lookout for the other brands to see if anyone put some other spin on the guarana taste.
