Oh wow, I've been catching up on today's debate and thought nothing would be as satisfying as watching Lee Anderson be expelled.

Then much later on, Zarah Sultana got named by the Speaker (after being given repeated opportunities to simply leave), leading to her being expelled, suspended, and losing salary for five days.

It's actually been a really good debate (these sorts usually aren't), painful as it is to me, and it was pure showboating by those two.

@rhys if they can afford to lose that sort of money for a bit of grandstanding ...
Perhaps I'm just a poor sod who struggles to pay the bills, but it leaves a bit of a bitter taste.

@cachondo Historically the money was a lesser concern than missing out on debates, votes, and committees while purportedly representing their constituencies.

Clearly that pales in comparison to getting a good clip for one's TikTok nowadays.

@rhys a standard MP earns roughly 2.5 to 3 times more than the median full-time salary in the UK today. has that always been the case? I'm no student of political history. it never really felt all about the money until it began to be hard to keep the outgoings incoming for us as a family.

@cachondo Nope, MPs' salaries were fairly modest once upon a time. In 1996, MPs only earned £34,000: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salaries_of_members_of_the_United_Kingdom_Parliament

The debate about it is pretty nuanced though. Lower salaries means more time in second jobs or limiting democratic representation to the wealthy.
