    There's so much concentration in the video call market that lots of people are now genuinely stumped when their browser asks them to share their mic and camera.

    Because they allowed that years ago for Google and Zoom and Teams and never had to use anything else, when they now stumble upon a self-hosted BBB instance or similar, they've forgotten how to do it.

    And they don't read the pop-up, because they've been conditioned by cookie banners not to.

    Tech is going great, innit.

      @xahteiwi that's why there is a new <usermedia> HTML element in the works: https://github.com/WICG/PEPC/blob/main/usermedia_element.md

      And it's already implemented and in a trial phase in Chrome: https://chromestatus.com/feature/4926233538330624

        @xahteiwi @anton I still thing, web conferences are a dead-end, should be abandoned and replaced by proper video conf clients based on SIP.

        Or to put it different: use your favorite client and not random snd numerous websites.

          @ij You might be shocked to learn that WebRTC already exists.

            @xahteiwi That's what I call "web conferences" - it's okay-ish when you have no client at all and as a last option you can use your browser. And no, I don't like WebRTC for that exact reason...

              @ij

              — "Lots of people can no longer cook their own food from raw ingredients, because pre-processed convenience foods are so abundant and readily available. That's a problem, don't you think?"
              — "Well digesting food is the wrong approach anyway, we should have nutritional IV drips for everyone!"

              See how helpful that sort of argument is?

                @xahteiwi @anton oh wait… your argument was that ironically tech is great because there‘s so much concentration on the Web conference market that people forget how to allow cameras and microphones. To that I argued that web conferences are bad because everything is in the browser and dedicated clients that uses SIP (besides of the maybe same transfer streams) may be better suited because you have one client that you can configure once and now you are making a completely out of context comparison in some sort of per hominem attack that my argument makes no sense?

                Well, that‘s at least…, interesting… sort of. 🙄
