    Who here has an XTEINK X4 eReader? I believe it's @joel that has one at least, and maybe someone else I know, but can't recall who.

    My question about this device is, can you load eBooks into it or would you read those from a site somewhere using this device. Just curious how that part would work.

    Or is this more for reading website content? I'm actually confused as to what this device does or is best for.

        @cliffwade @joel you load ebooks onto it. I don't have one but I've been tempted, but I don't need yet another eink device 😄

        The stock firmware isn't great, but the community has built around it and the crosspoint firmware gets rave reviews.

          @andrewmelder Where would I get eBooks to put on it? Can I get them from Amazon and load them into the X4?

          How hard is it to change the firmware? Do you need to root the device or something similar? I literally know absolutely nothing about this device, but have seen it mentioned by others several times.

          @joel

            @cliffwade @joel getting the books is..tricky. I used to get them from Amazon and strip the DRM using Calibre. But they made that path more difficult last year.

            Now I buy from eBooks.com and do the same thing. What you need in the end is a DRM free ePUB file to load onto the device.

            I can't say much about the firmware. However it seems to be a web-based installer which appears pretty simple. https://crosspointreader.com/#flash-tools

              @andrewmelder And how difficult is it to strip the DRM from an eBook file?

              As you can see/tell, I'm completely new to this. I wonder if Calibre is on MacOS or not, or what is similar that would work.

              @joel

                @cliffwade @joel super easy. Calibre + the DeDrm plugin freely available online. Use it on my Mac just fine

                  @andrewmelder Interesting. And I assume this DeDRM plugin is something I can get from within Calibre itself?

                  @joel

                    @cliffwade @joel it's been a little bit honestly. From memory the plugin is a download from GitHub repository and then you just load the plugin into Calibre from the file

                      @andrewmelder Gotcha. Thanks for all of the information.

                      I'm curious if this is a good "starter" eInk device if you will. I've never owned one, but would like to start reading again and this seems like a possible good way to do so.

                      @joel
