    @samhenrigold I put LG on the "never buy" list after they replaced their first smart TV OS, NetCast, and just completely abandoned the platform. This was shortly after buying my very first "smart" TV, ever. We had to watch Netflix via the Wii, instead.

    In doing my research on "screw LG forever" I determined that all "smart" TVs were crap-by-design, and the best practice is lock it down as best you can and serve it HDMI from a computer you can better control.

          tv software is the great equalizer. you could buy a $200 walmart tv or a $2500 LG and you’ll still get ads in there and a hard button on the remote to some streaming service that won’t exist in a year

          @samhenrigold That's why I'll never ever buy a smart tv. Just a dumb OLED panel with a raspi attached.

                      @samhenrigold

                      And both will be making big money by selling information in what you watch every second of the day to data brokers.

                      Also other information it gathers such as, ip address, wifi details etc, so this data can be combined with your Facebook, app data, web browsing surveys,,
                      other offline data , all to build profiles on you , to target you with ads.

                      The tv makers are even selling tvs below cost, as they make more $ selling data, than tvs.
                      LG insert their own ads on screen as well.

                            @jessesheidlower anyway when I bought this LG TV I was hellbent on not giving them an inch. Took it out of the box, skipped every EULA I could, never connected it to wifi. Just hooked up my Apple TV and try not to think about the monsters that lurk beyond the safety of the apple tv.

                            @samhenrigold @jessesheidlower I connected it to a network whose firewall rejects all traffic. Operated it to the best of my ability to hit every online feature and explicitly block every goddamned thing that attempted to phone home (from every other network). Went back and whitelisted the one app I wanted. The UI is nice and clean because it has never had a drop of bandwidth to cache advertisements.

                              @samhenrigold I recently replaced my smart TV with a small Linux machine running a vnc server wired in to it and I'm always so glad I did. It's a little unwieldy to control from my phone but holy crap is it better than ANY smart TV

                                @samhenrigold and what I want is a screen that turns on with the connected devices and turns off when I turn them off. Ideally I will use the remote to tweak settings and then never have to touch it again.

                                  @samhenrigold Never setup network settings on a TV! Get your own streamingbox (I use apple TV it allows a little more control) or make one. TV’s are to easy to hack or modify, plus they spy.
