tv software is the great equalizer.

@samhenrigold Do buttons merge when companies do?
@willi when two buttons love each other very much…

@samhenrigold
Also, that there's no way to find out what's in the box. "Hi, I want to buy your expensive TV, can you tell me if the remote has random crap on it?" "No, no idea, sorry."@jessesheidlower My parents got one of the earliest “magic remote” LG TVs where you can wiggle it around like a wii remote and a pointer comes on screen. Those things broke constantly and cost $70 to replace. Every time we got a new one, there was a good chance they shuffled around which buttons it had.
kinda beautiful if you think about it.

@jessesheidlower anyway when I bought this LG TV I was hellbent on not giving them an inch. Took it out of the box, skipped every EULA I could, never connected it to wifi. Just hooked up my Apple TV and try not to think about the monsters that lurk beyond the safety of the apple tv.

Who will be the first domino to fall
@samhenrigold I’m surprised that Sling is still trying to be a thing.
“LG Channels” will probably unceremoniously morph into some terrible new name.

"My TV needs a firewall" is something no one should have to say.

sam henri gold, you mean LG will acquire the stupid Russian messaging app that no one wants?

@samhenrigold the 2 amazon buttons has me imagining an AWS remote with a button for every AWS service. possibly actually a more sane way to navigate the AWS console
@ryan @samhenrigold It's going to be in storage out-of-state for a few more months, but I own a Stream Deck and have a little experience customizing the button images and actions for silly BS. If I was still in the AWS ecosystem I could see it being very useful for the exact thing you're talking about.

Who will be the first domino to fall
Who will be the first to pull the carpet put from under themselves? Because they are all definitely vying to do that.

tv software is the great equalizer. you could buy a $200 walmart tv or a $2500 LG and you’ll still get ads in there and a hard button on the remote to some streaming service that won’t exist in a year
@samhenrigold I put LG on the "never buy" list after they replaced their first smart TV OS, NetCast, and just completely abandoned the platform. This was shortly after buying my very first "smart" TV, ever. We had to watch Netflix via the Wii, instead.
In doing my research on "screw LG forever" I determined that all "smart" TVs were crap-by-design, and the best practice is lock it down as best you can and serve it HDMI from a computer you can better control.

@samhenrigold That's why I'll never ever buy a smart tv. Just a dumb OLED panel with a raspi attached.
