@berru this is the most ancient breed in the British Isles - soay from the St Kilda group of islands in the northwest of Scotland. They shed their fleece mostly, they lamb outside and are excellent mothers with good feet. Flighty but fascinating and, as you can tell, I’m smitten

@JeniParsons Ooooh I heard of soay as "the breed no fence can contain"! Lovely! I might misremember but I thought they had two pairs of horns as well. Maybe it's yet another breed!

@berru well mine rarely try to escape (ram lambs seeing ewes in a field across the road was too much for them)
but it’s Manx loghtans and some Jacobs that have 4 horns -

@JeniParsons They're a bit feral and rustic, but I like them a lot! It's the smallest breed I think. I've seen lambs bigger than them. I also like that they have various colors ranging from black to white.

@berru I’ve seen pictures but never seen them irl. Do you eat them or are they pets?

@JeniParsons They're a bit shy to be pets, and they're quite small to eat. Mine range from 12kg to 35kg. So I guess they're more like cute landmowers

@berru the Soay are from about 25-35 kg - we only eat the boys and then not till they’re at least 18 months as they’re slow growing. I’m glad you enjoy yours. - the feisty, flighty aspect is partly what I enjoy about mine. They’ll come to the bucket, mostly, but won’t be herded by a dog or moved until they’re ready. Delightful (and occasionally really annoying) 🫣

@JeniParsons Yeah, tell me about it. It's all delightful until they get footrot and you gotta catch them everyday for two months.
I've seen a *very* good working dog working Ouessant sheep once, but here all we have an unproperly trained dog, and beginner sheperd and an idiot herd. Recipe for disaster
