What I find super annoying is the proliferation of auto-dubbing on YouTube.

@eq @alda Some years ago while learning Russian for work I watched a certain Russian comedy (The Kitchen) on YT. There was a certain male French character whose lines were dubbed by a flat voiced female speaker. Now, this is not a YT thing, it is how TV in Russia is, dubbing, but everyone's lines read by the same person, and all flat. German TV dubbing is much better, but that voice over in documentaries makes me unable to understand anything. Also, background noise makes me unable to understand the dialogue. I need subtitles even for films in my first language.

I DO NOT WANT THIS. JUST GIVE ME FUCKING SUBTITLES BECAUSE I'M FUCKING LITERATE.
@alda It recently auto-dubbed Barbara's Rabarberbar into English for me.
Auto-dubbing people speaking is horrendous, but auto-dubbing a literal song is even worse.

@alda So this IS a thing. I thought I was losing my mind when I saw a video the other day...

@alda at least you can tell YouTube which languages you understand somewhere in your account setting and those don’t get auto-dubbed which for me solved 80% of the problem

@alda Okay weird, I experienced this on my KodI/LibreELEC "TV", but on my PC this is not happening, it is not even a setting. Maybe because I did not select any preferred languages in my settings?
I am unsure how this works

@bix It actually doesn't work most of the time and that is the problem.

@alda
Another thing the Anglos do not get is that to non-Anglos English is the easier language. They think their replacing phonetics with (local) tradition amounts to "complexity"@DataKnightmare @alda anglos made translate in firefox. Anglos! Monolinguals! It's unuseful. Disabled on third minute and never enabled again.

@bix Furthermore, subtitles are a thing. Subtitles. For people who know how to read.

@alda subtitles are the best 100% agreed

@alda really? It worked for a while but a few weeks ago I noticed I got a few dubbed videos (YouTube probably forgot a few languages) so I set them again and I haven’t had a doubled video since (and I have, eh, 5 or 6 languages enabled now)

@alda it is hideous. Watched a video the other day that was originally in Brazilian Portuguese. The autodub was completely disconcerting and made no sense because the original language was jokey and used loads of allusions. The English autodub was just a robot blandly reading weird literal translations of sentences without any emotion. Absolutely terrible.
@tommorris@mastodon.social @alda@topspicy.social Sometimes it will autotranslate English comedy channels into German and it kills the puns

@alda I understand german and english. I watch *exclusively* german and english, because all the channels I've subscribed to produce videos either in either german or english. I do not need nor want to have german translated to english and vice versa.
It sounds fucking horrible, loses literally everything communication is supposed to transport and adds a minute or so to load times.

@alda following on the strength of "jira munchers" as an insult

Dear YouTube,
EVEN IF I SPEAK ENGLISH, I KNOW OTHER LANGUAGES AND UNLIKE YOU, I WANT TO LEARN THEM BETTER YOU UNDEREDUCATED AMERICAN TECHBROLOGARCH CUNTS.
@alda Agreed!

@alda »JUST GIVE ME FUCKING SUBTITLES«.
Though please don't FORCE them upon me either. Just let me choose please, 'cause I'm already adult and hence can (and want to) decide for myself.
