well that’s fucked! made a lot of good connections there, I hope communities find some better alternatives soon

@trashpandaqc For the communities I run I'm trying to think of a transitional solution involving protocol bridges. Right now I have one working for Matrix<->Discord and plan to get one going for Matrix<->Stoat and Stoat<->Discord.
Trying to meet folks where they are at and give them options/space/time to get out (since in my experience most people are scared/weirded out by non-corporate platforms, even lefties)
@incentive tbh after reading the matrix/discord comparison on the official matrix site, I don't feel all that comfortable with their moderation abilities. for example people get notified if they're banned even before joining a community, or maintain privileges if they leave and come back, it seems ripe for abuse. haven't read much about Stoat but heard it's kinda unfinished?
if everyone really wants to avoid surveillance I think it might just be down to starting Signal groups instead.

@trashpandaqc But I do agree I wish we could just all move to Signal, use for chat, use jitsi for gaming/stream, etc.,
I went with Stoat as its the one most folks seem to be mentioning and making accounts for.
But it definitely is not fully developed yet. There's also no federation yet, so if you self-host it will require users to make a new account rather than simply using an existing one. So I went with the main stoat server for now instead of self-hosting. [2/2]
@incentive oof yeah insane that there's a stigma against the one messaging app that's not connected to gov surveillance
️ there are a few creative/professional group chats I'm on between Signal and Whatsapp. I don't think it could work for everything, but for some of the slower and more focused servers I'm in, it would be great.

@trashpandaqc at least one of the (very few) groups i'm in on Discord is looking at a Matrix swapover. luckily much more technically apt people than me in there...
i think a private Mastodon server might be a good option for some groups but that's easier said than done of course, all of this is. almost everyone i've talked with is planning to kill their Discord accts entirely tho, which is good to see. as soon as this sorta stuff crops up it's all downhill from there.
@tsrono yeah for some of the meandering conversational servers mastodon would be a really similar experience, I think.
it is for sure the worst way they could be trying to implement this, way beyond "compliance" to inviting big brother into the room.
