Have US airports always been a concentrated dose of American dystopia or has it just been O'Hare and everything post-9/11? Somehow Security was not the most disturbing source of decay and horror. Or maybe it was and I'm just numb to it.

@arclight At the office I used to work at in Florida they had stickers on the doors telling staff that this was a gun and knife free zone - and they had annual active shooter drills.

This is an engineering firm with offices and test labs and serious work being done.

So, yeah - it has been dystopic for some time ...

@arclight every US airport I've been to since 9/11 has been like this, and you probably are numb to it. Somehow O'Hare always felt worse than most other airports, but I think it's just a combination of scale and the architecture amplifies the mood.

Encounter a wild techbro in the airport? Don't worry - contact one of Austin Bergstrom Airport's Techbro Control Specialists who will bait one of our specially constructed techbro live traps with Claude tokens, capture, and harmlessly release the techbro at one of our server farms upstate

@arclight from everything I've heard, O'Hare was always dystopian, but yes, post-9/11 security theatre made every airport into an O'Hare zone.

Away from your sterile metallic Skinner Box condo? Need coffee but can't bear the thought of "interacting" with other "people" who might have a "personality" and subject you to "conversation"? @arclight O'Hare has always felt like a prison to me--that terminal design is absolutely oppressive--but pre-9/11 plane travel was mostly just a tedious affair. Like going to get on a bus that just happened to fly.

@arclight My favorite pointless airport luxury are those little robotic glasses washers. Like you pop them in a little thing on a stand and watch a machine spray and dry them. It legitimately feels nice to put some sparkly fresh glasses on my face and I will use those things every time I see them.
