Understand how it is nice to feel good about something, but the purpose here was to rein in ICE. DHS funding was deemed sufficient leverage to get the ICE reforms they were demanding. They couldn't use just ICE, because it is already funded for years.

So, 'lines at airports' etc, were precisely their leverage to get the demanded ICE reforms. Somewhere along the way, this has been finessed to funding all aspects of DHS except ICE, which has plenty of money, so hard to see how this is a win.

The fundamental problem here is that Republicans have little concern for the suffering of the average American, so threatening then with government shutdowns rarely work. The fact that Democrats cave when they see Americans in trouble is (somewhat paradoxically) why we should support them.

Yup. What we saw was the administration reveling in the pain and suffering of people at airports. This was not a problem for them. It was another opportunity. That is why we saw them trying to tie it to the SAVE act. Their capacity to inflict hardship on their constituents really ties the Democrats hands.

The deal in the Senate this morning to fund DHS except ICE and CBP is being hailed as a win for the Democrats. In fact, it is complete capitulation.

The promise they made when they separated out DHS funding and reopened the gov, was no funding for all of DHS until three specific reforms were made to ICE, including requiring warrants and no masks. ICE actually has plenty of funding for years from the $80B BBB. So basically Dems got nothing.

Attached: 1 image Chuck Schumer has made a deal... Let's write it down and remember it. Government stays open, but he PROMISES NO DHS FUNDING unless: 1) End roving patrols and tighten rules governing the use of warrants. 2) Establish a universal code of conduct governing federal law enforcement officers’ use of force. 3) No masks, required body cameras and proper identification. https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5711343-democrats-schumer-immigration-demands-dhs-funding/ #Schumer #DHS

@mastodonmigration it is NOT complete capitulation. The fight was always about ICE and ICE is not funded.

Moving the goal posts doesn’t help matters. PLUS Trump said he wouldn’t sign anything unless they also passed the SAVE Act. That’s now dead in the water.

This offer had been on the table 7 different times. The GOP folded.

Let’s take the win and move on the rest of the issues.

Fair enough. Just pointing out that nothing was accomplished, ICE has not been restrained and ICE has plenty of funding from the BBB. But, if it feels good to call it a win, as you say, we can move on. Just feel like the victims of ICE deserve not to have these reforms abandoned.

@mastodonmigration @ryanjyoder Dems hands are not tied at all. The most loyal Dem voters are fine enduring the pain. It's Dems like Schumer(and yes there are quite a lot of them) who have ties to Republicans who get antsy whenever Trump's approval is about to drop below 40%. Time and again Dems cave whenever that happens, and many Dem voters assist Trump's march toward racist dictatorship because they share the GOP's racism.

@mastodonmigration @ryanjyoder the suffering at the airports was a HUGE problem for Trump & Republicans. Their approval was plunging, along with their midterm prospects. Shutdowns reliably do that. The caving is Dems helping the GOP. It's horrible and incredibly dangerous to those caving Dems themselves. I do understand that the pressure to cave is coming from the many Dem VOTERS who have personal ties to GOP voters, and who share the bigotry & hatred of GOPers to some degree.

@ryanjyoder @mastodonmigration the people suffering who are seriously loyal Dems with few or no ties to GOP voters are very willing to endure the pain to crush Trump's approval. But racist, right-wing Dems led by John Fetterman want to help Trump toward racist dictatorship. They have divided loyalties.

@mastodonmigration And now I wonder if the Senate Dems knew Johnson would refuse to have a vote? Did they know it wasn’t going to matter anyway?

Maybe we will find out on some podcast this weekend.

But Republicans own TSA not being paid for sure now! 😁🤷‍♀️
