    I said it before but:

I really believe that with the rise of #AI we need dorky people more than ever. We need niche special interests. We need specialized academic fields.

We need knowledge like the person's on Insta who keeps pointing out that AI generated images of Cambrian fossils are clearly fake, because the crustacean shell has the wrong number of little bumps.

We need people like the witchy person who likes fiber arts so much they learned how to shear sheep and process wool themselves.

@TarkabarkaHolgy The latter there is more straightforwardly pragmatic than dorky, since wool products are useful and demand outweighs supply in wool processing.

@TarkabarkaHolgy That's just, like, there's work other than on computers, and people need to consider doing that work

@TarkabarkaHolgy I agree fully and am in awe of those who can.

I wish I was smart enough to actually challenge the status quo, instead of simply becoming a victim of it.

@TarkabarkaHolgy My Mum taught herself to dye wool with natural dyes, and then later to spin it. I did suggest that a sheep was the next logical step, but it never happened.

@thomas_decker absolutely! I can't tell you how many times I have to call out "ancient legends" that don't exist

                Okay, follow-up toot:

What's your own niche offline AI-busting expertise? 😄

Mine is folklore and mythology ("Nope, that 'ancient goddess' is AI made")

But I also crochet, sail, and do traditional archery.

@TarkabarkaHolgy I work in IT so obviously AI is the bane of my life. My niche offline expertise would be fishing, and Tolkien trivia (that's not really an expertise)

@TarkabarkaHolgy I know how to make string from various local plants and turn that string into baskets and nets. I'm not an archaeologist but volunteer at a local museum focused on the stoneage and show the guests how to make their own string.

                        @TarkabarkaHolgy
I’m collecting and researching folk songs, with a focus on the German youth movement (also 1970s folk bands), and high quality typesetting of these.
Fortunately I found a mixed bunch of scouts that are interested in the same, unfortunately we live too far from each other to meet personally more often.

Also somewhat involved with several trades of nerdism and activism. 😉

As a professional tech editor, I can’t allow halluzinazis.

Well, you could call proper machine learning and expert systems “traditional AIchery”. 😉
